As a designer and burgeoning digital photographer I often wonder if I have lost out on not using analogue film photography?
Film has many wondrous possibilites and a whole different set of complications that you need to compensate for, whereas with digital photography now that we have digital SLRs it has got to the point where digital is as good as traditional photography, with sites like Picasa and flickr and a digital camera almost anyone can be a photographer – some good some bad.
With Polaroid dropping the production of its instant film it also looks like film is being used less and less. I’m not sure that this is a good thing, film has its own wonderful beneifits over digital.
Over three quarters of US-based pro photographers who took past in a survey in late 2007 said they would continue to use film for some projects despite the fact of using digital formats reasons, ranged from “films superiority in capturing more information in medium and large format film ” to ”archival storage”. Around four years latter I wonder if this is still the case.
With digital pushing analogue cameras out of many stores what does this now mean? It feels like an artform is dying out which is a very big shame. Not to say that I don’t love digital because its much simpler to work with, I can take photos and see results without having to wait for them to develop.
I think like many an analogue devices which have made way for the digital counter parts in the last few years like records and CD’s people will still buy them but not in such large quantise i think this will become more of a specialist field.
with analouge photograprhy it takes more than just the point and click that you can get with a digital camera you need to delop skills to use a manaul camera not to be said that you dont need to do this with a digital camera well cerytainly with a slr camera if you want to get realy good photos you need to use more than just the auto function you need to consider what setting you want your apperiture and your iso so with certain things learnt with anlogue photography they translate well to digital.
I have dabbled in analogue photography but never really used more than a simple camera. I only discovered my love for photography in the last 5 years (digital photography that is!). Sometimes I wonder whether my pictures would be better if I had started with an analogue camera or would i still love it as much. Analogue photography takes time and certainly after an initial outlay costs less or does it? I believe it does but why not read the article on this subject on the beyond megapixels website and tell me what your opinion is in the comments bellow.
